Blog claiming enables a blog author to associate their identity with their blog. Technorati has long supported a number of different ways for members to verify that they can author on a blog:

  • Logging into it programmatically with a username and password (AKA "quick claiming")
  • Posting to it with a special link (AKA "post claiming")
  • Adding a text token to your template (AKA "embed claiming")
OK, that sounds complicated. Well, we've added another way for authors to claim their blogs using OpenID. And if you're using an OpenID enabled blogging platform, it's easy-like-Sunday-morning easy.

Developed by LiveJournal wunderkind Brad Fitzpatrick (he probably hates being called that, sorry Brad), OpenID is an identification system that is enjoying a groundswell of attention and adoption.

Going forward, this is how authors using blogging platforms that support OpenID can claim their blogs on Technorati with it:

  1. Log in to your blog
  2. Log in to your Technorati member account (or sign up for membership)
  3. From your account, you can add a blog claim
  4. Enter your blog URL and click Begin Claim
  5. Click Use OpenID Claim as seen below

More information about blog claiming is available on Technorati. There's a lot published about OpenID on the web. Even though it started with LiveJournal, OpenID applications aren't limited to blogging. Wikitravel and Zooomr support OpenID. A growing list of software and services that support OpenID is maintained on the OpenID Enabled wiki. If you're a software developer interested in OpenID, there's even a bounty offered for implementers contributing OpenID support to open source software projects.

Technorati will be developing additional features and services that support OpenID but I'm very pleased to invite OpenID-enabled bloggers to claim their blogs now on Technorati! And I apologize for the unwarranted Eagles and Lionel Richie references.
